For the past couple days I have been researching curriculum, ordering curriculum and planning our 2014-2015 school year. In one of my favorite homeschool blogs, confessions of a homeschooler, Erica talks about how she plans her curriculum for the entire year over the course of one weekend. Well, last year, I thought that was to daunting, this year, I feel it will benefit our homeschool immensely. By pre-planning I will know what my kids are doing each day, how far we will get through each text, and pre-plan when our vacations will be. If the plan ends up being to rigid or too soft, the beauty of it is that I can change it as I go, its written on paper (well okay, on computer screen) not in stone.
I am excited with the new textbooks I have for math (Houghton Miflin(3) and McGraw Hill (6)), science (Scott Foresman(3,6)) and language (Harcourt (3) McGraw Hill (6)). I am awaiting the arrival of my Health (Harcourt (3,6)) and social studies ((Scott Foresman (3,6)) I found several of the textbooks at my local goodwill for $2 to $4 and I always find great supplemental books on science, history and nature there as well. Other books not found in time at goodwill I get used from Amazon, almost always running me under $10 each shipped.
New curriculum this year include health, spanish, typing, and a class I have dubbed technology where I plan to use our new chromebooks to try and review apps, online tools, etc to teach the kids. I am also adding journaling though I am not sure whether the journals will be book form or by blog (private or public). I also plan to ensure I spend more time on states, presidents, art appreciation and music appreciation....all while staying within my scheduled 210 days of 3.5 hours study. (TN law requires we do 180 days at 4 hours a day.)
