It has been said, a picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures, particularly, photographs, can do and say so many things. They provide an accurate historical document to the way a person, place or thing REALLY looks at a given time, not subject to interpretation of others likes and dislikes. A photo can be ART. A photo can be used as(or in) a journal or diary. A photo or the process of taking photos can be a learning tool, a microscope, a magnifier, a way of separating a crowded scene.
So often my children ask for my phone, computer or camera to take a picture. I almost never say no because I love the pictures they take and the ability to see the world through their eyes.
I often have my child take her Ipod out as a tool for school. For example we are in unit A of our science curriculum and studying plants. I sent her out with her Ipod camera to take photos of different plants, weeds, and trees and then we compared the pictures discussing different number, type and color of leaves, stem thicknesses, etc.
I hope you will try a camera in your curriculum. I'd love to hear about what you do.
