I was struggling to find an appropriate Spanish curriculum for elementary school age children. I am not a Spanish speaker and would be learning the language with my students so I wouldn’t be offering much knowledge in the form of pronunciation of written text only. I couldn’t seem to find any text book based program that was easy enough yet provided a large vocabulary. Looking online provided more options, but again, many programs seemed either too difficult or too easy. I began looking at home educator reviews of curriculum online at places like Home school Reviews and found a common appreciation in Visual Link Spanish a free online program that offers a large vocabulary with both words and phrases as well as pictures, which may assist in word and phrase recall. I like FREE so I was easily convinced to try out this program.
I also find many apps and even My Spanish Coach (a Nintendo DS game) to be a fun way to learn basic Spanish. I love the use of apps and online “games” and videos for learning because it takes some teaching time off me and is fun for my students. I also find that having more than one version of spoken word is helpful because just like in the real world, different programs have different words, dialects or pronunciations of words.
