You can teach your child so much useful information in the grocery store. I love to "teach" my kids life skills, you know, those skills that are SOOOO important to lead a healthy, happy, fruitful life. One important life skill in my opinion is comparison shopping.
If you ask your child to pick out a cereal they will inevitably choose one that is in a highly decorated box, often offering a great toy or video game system winning opportunity. Chances are they have seen this cereal advertised on TV or had it at a friend or relatives home.
Before you let them chuck that cereal in the cart, pull it back out and discuss it. Ask your child why they picked such cereal. Listen the responses and then ask them "How much does the cereal cost?" Chances are they will be clueless. You can then show them how much the cereal cost and then have them do some comparison pricing with similar cereals and generic offerings. I even showed my child the price per ounce feature that is available at Walmart for fast comparison. You could even go as far to look at nutritional information and servings per package if you are so inclined.
I do this type of teaching often and occasionally when my kids want an expensive "toy" I help them go online to read reviews to see if the product is worth the money and whether we can get it "online" or at another store for a better price.
