Demme Learning was so generous to provide me a copy of their Spelling You See, Level B, Jack and Jill module in exchange for a weekly blog update while my home scholars worked on the course.
Our 2014-2015 school year starts June 9th so this week I reviewed the curriculum’s Instructor’s Handbook and first weekly lesson. I will briefly explain my thoughts on the Instructor’s Handbook for this series, Part 1 of my Spelling You See series.
The Instructor’s Handbook, for Jack and Jill level B, which retails for $18.00 online is a 72 page booklet. It is bound well in a water resistant looking material.
The table of contents is divided into several sections with clearly marked instructions for 36 lessons. There is also some great information on how Spelling You See came to be and why it may be the perfect spelling curriculum for your child or children. I am excited to try this program as my 3rd grader is a very poor speller and can’t seem to learn to spell with memory learning. A section entitled “Five Developmental Stages of Spelling” discusses a collegiate description on how students learn to spell.
Jack and Jill instructions discuss how using Nursery Rhymes are familiar and fun for kids and I am happy to see things other than spelling fundamentals enforced, such as pencil mechanics, reading and reading comprehension, following instructions, punctuation and capitalization. I also like how the lessons are short, maybe 10 minutes in length and focus on a 5 day week but allow a less stringent schedule when required.
Tune in next week where I will discuss Lesson 1 and how it works for my student J-Bird.
