State familiarization

2 days a week for about 10-20 minutes our schedule includes state familiarization.  During the state familiarization time we color a flag of the state and learn about why the flag looks the way it does and when it was adopted.  We learn the states capital and its abbreviation as well as its shape, size in relation to other states and geographic location.  We also like to hear about important landmarks or events that occurred in the state.  I also print out a sheet with random icons such as the state bird, fish, tree and flower for my students to color as I read about the state. I got the coloring sheets from education.com  There are lots of websites to get state information.  My go-to site is Enchanted Learning but I also visit Awesome America or Kids.USA.Gov
